ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR of SOCIOLOGY
DIRECTOR OF CRIMINOLOGY

 

Dr. Heather Melton received her PhD in Sociology with a concentration in Criminology from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 2001. She is currently an Associate Professor of Sociology and Director of Criminology at the University of Utah. She teaches classes on criminology, gender and crime, sexual assault, and policing.   Her research explores gender-based violence, specifically intimate partner abuse, stalking, and sexual assault, and in the criminal justice response to these problems. She is particularly interested in how victims of violence against women interact with criminal justice and service systems. She currently serves as the researcher for the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative in Salt Lake County and the State of Utah.
