Thank you for your interest in the Sociology Doctoral Program at the University of Utah.
The University of Utah is a 25,000 student campus located on the eastern edge of Salt Lake City along the western front of the Wasatch Mountains . Salt Lake City has a population of 170,000 in a metropolitan area of slightly more than one million. The nearby mountains provide hiking, rock climbing, mountain biking and of course, world class skiing opportunities. You will find that Salt Lake City is a great place to live as well as to pursue an advanced degree.
Sociology has been taught at the University of Utah since 1896, the third university in the United States to offer regular courses in the discipline. The doctoral program specializes in two primary areas; Comparative International Sociology (CIS) and Population and Health (PHS). Descriptions of these programs can be under the "graduate program" section of our website. The goal of these programs is to provide students with both the theoretical background and the statistical tools necessary to conduct informed, empirical research in academic and policy related careers. A Masters of Statistics in Sociology , an interdisciplinary degree administered by the University Statistics Committee, is also offered.
The Sociology Department awards Assistantships and Fellowships to qualified graduate students. Assistantship and Fellowship stipends cover the academic year (Fall and Spring terms) and are accompanied by a tuition wavier. Typically, students in good standing receive support for five years. The Department and the University are fully committed to the goals of equal opportunity and affirmative action in the selection and funding of graduate students.
I hope you will give serious consideration to selecting the University of Utah for your graduate training in sociology. If you have any questions about the application procedure, department program, or living in Salt Lake City , please feel free to contact me. I look forward to hearing from you.
